Fight Fair Rules for Couples
The rules that protect the relationship instead of winning the argument.
The principle
Protecting the relationship sounds soft until you try it mid fight. It means you can be angry and still refuse contempt. You can want to be understood and still refuse character assassination. You're not pretending the issue doesn't matter. You're refusing to burn the house down to prove the kitchen was messy.
The rules
- 1. Name the goal out loud
- 2. Attack the problem, not the person
- 3. No stacking the entire marriage into one fight
- 4. Take turns without performing a closing argument
- 5. Use a pause with a return time
- 6. Ban the weapons you both know are nuclear
Off-limits, even when you’re upset
- Name-calling and mockery, even the "jokes."
- Threats to leave, divorce, or "we're done" said as leverage.
- Bringing in private vulnerabilities shared in quieter seasons.
- Silent punishment with no return plan.
